Hi folks,
Perhaps this belongs in the X newsgroup, but I don't feel
real at home there -- PostScript is more my thing. I support a
PostScript interpreter for the V-Systems VSI*FAX product, and
a customer has reported a problem converting X window dump files
into the .fax format.
The window dump is all grayscale, with white letters, and
the problem is the grayscale background -- it's a 50% halftone.
Those of you familiar with the T.4 encoding scheme know that this
is about the theoretically worst possible pattern to send, and
we're seeing 15- and 20-minute transmission times for a single
page.
Normally I would just set a different screen or modify the
transfer function, but it seems that xpr is converting the
halftone into the ultimate on-and-off bits -- we get a one-bit
deep image with no useful grayscaling information to shortcut
around.
I am not real motivated to learn X, and if somebody else
has already gone down this road, it would help me a lot. In
the meantime, I'll be trudging through the source to xpr...
