How to r/w from/to an external file?

I am a new hand in postscript and try to read/write data from/to an external
file. I am using a VAX11. I can read the data and display them by preview tool
but when I try to print them out, error message was printed out, undefined file,
is there any solution outthere? Please email me directly, I appreciate your kind
assistance.
