Only later models of QMS printers have auto detection.  You have to use the
switch on this model.  The manual for the one I have at work is at work.
As for the emulation, I'll have to look it up. (brown@vidiot.com)

<2.  Apparently this printer came with a couple of utility diskettes when it was
<new, and QMS wants something like $150 for those diskettes and the manuals for
<the software on them - does anybody know what these utils do?  Are they worth
<having, or more specifically are they worth spending that much $$ on?

They are only for setting various modes on the printer, like speed, handshaking,
etc.  That can be done without the programs on the diskettes, which are for the
PC anyway and don't work under Unix.
