Sorry if this is a repost but I'm not sure it got out of here last time.

I have been reading the ``Adobe Type 1 Font Format, version 1.1'' and
would like to understand how the ``flex'' and ``hinting'' work. I am
however a novice at postscript and the thought of wading unaided
through 4 pages of postscript subroutines doesn't exactly thrill me to
the bone.

1) Does anyone know of any documents, books or whatever that give a
description of how these subroutines work?

I have a few other questions whic maybe easier to answer and could
probably be worked out if I didn't have to ask the first question but
since I do here they are

2) How do the stem hints interact with the alignment zones?

3) What is the operation of the ``dotsection'' command?

If I've just missed the answer in the black book a page reference
would be fine.
