It turned out that this was not the problem at all. Our setup is the printer
is connected to a Sun via a serial line. We discovered that it was necessary
to connect pin 8 (Data Carrier Detect) in order to get the printer to work
properly. After doing this, we have found no problems with the printer.

I received the following 2 replies to my request. Thanks to both of you for your
responses.

If it is the board I am thinking of - 1986ish technology here, then the only
chip which stores information after the printer is powered off is the
"Zero Power Ram" chip - marked MK48Z02B-20 (U33 on the board).

I guess either replace this with a nice new fresh one, or find a friend with
an eprom burner or similar who can flush it for you.

cheers..

... at what kind of computer: DOS, Mac, NeXT, ...?
If you use a DOS machine I've a hint: At every font disk you buy from Linotype
(and I suggest from Adobe too) there is a program 'psdown.exe' (for
serial-connected printers) or 'pcsend.exe' (for parallel-connected printers)
included. This program contains a option 'restart printer'. A panel informs:
'This option clears the printer of any fonts you may have downloaded. ...' So
it might clear the rest, too!?
If the program isn't available to you feel free to mail - I'll try to send it
at your site.
