I know exactly how to reproduce that effect on a printer that we use:
just change the resolution from 300dpi to 600dpi.  Reason turns out to
be the the printer hasn't got enough memory (as delivered) to be able
to do both, and the supplier stupidly didn't advise the customer (us)
to buy more.

I'm not saying that is also your precise problem, but it might give a
clue.
