When one is drafting a TeX document from home and you want to look at what
you've produced, you run it through TeX, and then through dvips to get a PS
file at the host. Now this is fine, except when you want to print that PS
file on your local PostScript machine, because if you only have perhaps one
page of document, you invariably get a file that is MUCH much bigger than
what you started with, because TeX uses a font (computer modern?) for which
there is no printer defined font, and so dvips must include the entire font
definition table into your PS file. This is a real pain when one is only at
1200 bd. (Yes, I know you _can_ zip things up and send them, but that avoids
the issue!)
There are definitely several solutions better than what you are doing
at the moment.
The first to consider is sending with the .tex file, or the .dvi file
across the phone link to the machine that has the printer, and run
(tex if necessary, then) dvips on that machine. The dvi file in
particular is a very compact representation of the document.
Next consider using standard postscript fonts. The easiest way of
doing this is probably to use times.sty (or another font if you
prefer). That is,
\documentstyle[times]{article}
or some such thing.
