Color Postscript Question

Forgive me if this is a FAQ or related to one. I wasn't able to find
a reference anywhere.

I've got this 1024 x 864 screen dump that I'm converting into color
Postscript. I've been successful in translating it into a printable file.

The problem arises in that there are only about 12 colors in the screen
image, so I'm creating a five Meg file when I could actually be creating
a much smaller file. I'm sure that the processing and printing would be
significantly faster if I could use four bits/pixel.

So is there some easy way to do "paletted" or mapped color? I've been
unsuccessful using single-nybble color in the image map, but maybe that's
a result of not knowing the right way to do it. Alternatively, is there
some way to get around the ascii expansion of the bitmap?

The target printer is a Tektronics Phaser III that supports Postscript
Level II.

Thanks!

The datasrc input to the "image" operator can be an arbitrary
PostScript procedure. You could write a procedure which reads paletted
color, translates to the desired values, and hands them off.

Since it's level II, you could also compress the whole file. See
section 3.13 of the PostScript Language Reference Manual, second
edition.

send mail to:

"color_printer_info@leda.wv.tek.com" with the line "send index" in the
body. You'll see an X-Window dump to PS level-2 filter. If you are only
using 12 colors, the indexed colorspace option with run-length or LZW
compression should squeeze that file down to a very compact size.
