Japanese fonts not found?

I am looking to do a definefont using a japanese font, but can't "find" the font. The definefont is straight from the red book:

100 dict begin
/SPEncoding
[
/.notdef/a few special characters...
...
] def
/KFON
/GothicBBB-Medium.EUC-H findfont dup length dict begin
    { 1 index /FID eq { pop pop } { def } ifelse } forall
    /Encoding SPEncoding def
    currentdict end definefont pop

The above returns 2 results, both bad. For some fonts, for example
GothicBBB-Medium.EUC-H, return this:
%LPS-W-TYPCHK, typecheck: Argument of wrong type - offending command is definefont

Other fonts return this:
%LPS-S-USERDATA, GothicBBB-Medium.EUC not found, using Courier.
The file contains japanese characters, so using Courier prints garbage, naturally.

Doing a dump of FontDirectory does list /GothicBBB-Medium.EUC-H,
so it ought to be available. It also lists fontnames of the form
/normalfontname.r##, such as /Ryumin-Light.r58. Using one of these fonts finishes without errors but prints a blank page -- no text, no surrounding graphics. Anybody know what these .r fonts are?
They are not listed for Times-Roman, Helvetica, etc.

Replacing ISOLatin1Encoding with KanjiEncoding, as called for by the japanese red book appendix E returns this error:
%LPS-W-UNDEF, undefined: Name not known - offending command is KanjiEncoding

A conventional setfont like this works just fine:
/Ryumin-Light-EUC-H findfont 24 scalefont def

The printer is a DEC LN82r, running off a Vax/VMS 5.4-2, DECprint 4.1J.

Thank you for any help. Please post or reply by e-mail.
