I recently got the PostScript renderings of the TeX CM fonts, and have been using them happily on 300dpi printers. However last week I had to prepare a paper for publication where they demanded a camera-ready copy at 600 dpi (at least). Hence I ran dvips -D600 ... and tried to print the file on two (different) printers, both capable of printing at 600 dpi - an IBM4029 running the interpreter version 52.1 - a QMS PS1700 running the interpreter version 52.4 In both cases the printers stopped before they printed anything with the message VMerror. As the test document only consists of one page without any graphics, the problem must come from the huge quantity of type1 font information, which is included at the beginning of the file. Does anybody on the net know how to twiddle the printer-parameters to put the fonts away somewhere, so that they do not eat up the VM memory, or how else can I proceed? As we want to start using printing at >600 dpi more and more I think that solving this problem in a general way becomes now very important. Thanks for your help.
