PostScript -> Cannon lbp4 ???

Hello all,

	I would like to print postscript files on
    my canon lbp-4 laser printer.. I know a few of the
    options, but could anyone shed some more light on them
    for me?

	a) Buy a postscript cartridge(~$500), Does this
    print well, is it true postscript?

	b) Ghostscript, I have tried to get the lbp8
    conversion working, it doesnt look like I got it.
    I compiled in the lbp8 driver and just got a bunch
    of junk on my printer.., Is there a way to get
    the lbp8 driver working with a lbp4 printer? How is
    the output? Am I better off buying a new printer?

	c) Are there any other software or hardware options?
    Id love to hear from you...

thanks *very* much in advance..

paul

	Definitely. Postscript cartridges come in a variety of options
like 17 fonts, 35 fonts, PostScript Level 2 and so on.

	Have you tried GoScript Version 4.0. It is really good. First
you have to print the postscript document to a file. Then run GoScript
to convert this file to the language that your printer will understand
and print it. Simple.

: c) Are there any other software or hardware options?

	I think that is all that I could think of.

Best regards,
Steve

	As you know i posted the same question last week. Here is
	the responses i get from the net. THANKS to all of you.

	I had some news since last week. Canon France tell me that
	the lpb4 and the lbp8 II are compatible and use the same
	language (CaPsl)(That mean the same escapes code).

	So gs ... -DEVICE=lbp8 should work with a printcap like this:

	lp|lpb4|CANON LBP4 laser printer:\
          :lp=/dev/ttya:sp=/usr/spool/lpd:lf=/dev/console:sh:1:\
	  :ms=cs8,-onlcr:

	I am waiting for the programmers manual of this printer and
	if necessary i shall rewrite a driver for this lp.

	By the way, you spoke about a postscript card which cost ~$500 ?!
	Where ? I found oonly one at $1200.

	Yes, that works. LBP8-II is compatible with the LBP4.
	Here is my /etc/printcap :

		laser|lp|Canon LBP4|my laser printer:\
		        :lp=/dev/ttya:sd=/usr/spool/lpd:lf=/dev/console:sh:1:\
		        :br#9600:ms=cs8,-onlcr,ixon,decctlq,-parity:mx#10000:

	That's not enough, you must have good settings in your printer.
	My printer settings :
		scaling = ON
		rotation = OFF
		ps = ON
		ecs = 8
		lp, aitoCR, autoLF = OFF
		paint = Partial
		rsmode = 8S

	Most of this settings are overriden by the commands in the file you
	print. But that is the way i got my printer works.

	It remain some prolems. By exemple i can't obtain italique fonts.
	And another problee is the slowness of the printing.
	It takes me 20mns to print the "golfer.ps" and 15mns to print
	only one page of text whith bold , Italique etc ...

	In my previous message i complain about the slowness of my printer.
	I am stupid.
	If you use the parrall device, the "golfer.ps" is printed in 2.30mns
	instead of 20mns.
