printing supermarket shelf labels?

Apologies if it's a FAQ but I've only just started reading this
group because I've only just got a postscript printer!

Currently we print supermarket shelf labels in our stores using
a HP LJII and a custom font cartridge for doing a bar code which
is read for re-ordering using a hand held entry device.

I would like to be able to print an equivalent shelf label using
postscript. I don't expect the text will be a problem but I am
a little concerned about the bar code. I'll be purchasing a
postscript programming book (any suggestions?) ASAP but I wonder
if I'll still need to get hold of some custom font definitions to
ultimately be able to do the bar codes?

I appreciate your time in reading this as I am obviously an extremely
novice postscript user, I'll be even more appreciative if you take
the time to reply.

Regards
