auto-initialization, erratic behavior of printer

I am having problems with my printer (TI Microlaser Plus + 1MB). When I try to
print a postscript document, sometimes I get the first two pages, sometimes I
get nothing, and sometimes I get the whole document. (That's with the same
document.) I've downloaded an error-handler, but no report gets printed
out. At one point during this process, I saw that the printer was
initializing. Under what circumstances would a printer initialize without
being told to explicitly? Could I be running out of memory? These problems
have occurred when I download a lot of stuff.

Need more info. For instance, if you are using a Macintosh, you could be
a victim of the infamous "LaserPrep Wars", that is, your driver could be
sensing the existince of an alien version of a LaserPrep header and
resetting
the printer accordingly. Different behavior at different times sounds like
the printer has something going on outside the server loop, and LaserPrep
Wars is merely an obvious (and annoying) example of this.
