MAC-Postscript IS NOT Postscript, what can I do?

(Aaarrrgghhh!!!)
I have a couple of papers written on a MacIntosh system (MacWrite and
Word). I always thought that the Mac programs would produce normal
Postscript but that just does not seem to be the case - UNFORTUNATELY.
When I print the output to a file (instead on a LaserWriter) then
I am not able to print this MAC-Postscript file on a normal
laser printer (or display it on a screen with ghostscript).
I know that the problem is the missing laserprep file. UNFORTUNATELY,
the laserprep file on the Mac is copy protected (I don't know why).
We have NewsPrint software that includes a laserprep clone and I tried
it. In fact, I succeeded to include the laserprep file with the command
newsprint/bin/pl --r --e /bin/cat file.macps :epsf_filter :laserprep > file.ps
Not too bad, BUT the file will continue not to be printable. The
Postscript interpreter complains about the very first command:
Error: /invalidaccess in def :-(
Operand stack:
/LW 999
Execution stack:
%interp_exit --nostringval-- --nostringval-- false --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
Dictionary stack:
399/479 4/200 399/479
(generated by ghostscript)
Mmmh. CAN anybody give me a hint how I can convert MAC-ps to ordinary ps??

If your file is missing the header, it sounds like an older version of the Mac system (i.e. one of the ones where you have to hold down a key combination during print to get a PostScript file.) I can suggest two things: 1) One possibility is (a) to get someone to help you with the laserprep protection, if that's really the problem, and (b) make sure you're generating the file correctly. There are two keystroke combinations, one of which is supposed to include the laserprep header and one which does not. 2) Easier, if you have a convenient Apple dealer, or a friend who can help out: upgrade your copy of the print service. The 6.1 print service includes a "print to file" button in its dialog box, and produces files that have a correct laserprep header. -- Rich
