How to test for Color Postscript
#5928

Is there a string that I can test for that will occur in
Color Postscript but not Black & White?
I would like to verify that the file is a color postscript
file before sending it to the printer.

Thanks

I assume that you are doing the test to make sure that color is actually
going to be produced, so that resources are not going to be wasted.

Unfortunately, unless you actually print the file, you aren't going to know.
Here is why I believe this is so...

Many programs, like FrameMaker can produce color documents. But, the user
has the option to only do B&W. But, the procedures that FrameMaker would
use for printing color are still in the PostScript prologue. Because of that,
grepping for color procedures will only show that the file has them, not that
they are being used.

On the other side of the fence, I use the color procedure "setrgbcolor" in
my document (the Star Trek: The Next Generation Program Guide), but it is set
for gray. It is there in case I get access to a color printer and want to
try some color printouts. The groff source is set for future enhancement.
In this case, sending my outputs to your color printer will produce B&W.

Without actually displaying the PostScript file with a color previewer,
you can't tell that it will, or won't, produce color.

Let me be proven otherwise.

I think the problem here is akin to the "how many pages" one. In order
to see if it's going to actually do color output, rather than just
think about it, you need to interpret it to the point where it marks
dots on the page, and for that you pretty much need a full-blown
interpreter.

If you can run Ghostscript on your machine and have a color monitor,
use that. Quite impressive; even more so when you consider the price.
