Is this newsgroup considered an appropriate forum for the
discussion of NeWS? I remember a listserv group dealing
with it a couple years ago, but no such thing appears in
my news distribution now. Does it still exist, or is this
now the closest thing there is to a NeWS discussion group?

One would not want to bet too much of anything on NeWS. When you
cut through all the dross, posturing, and face saving, NeWS is
essentially a dead duck.

You mean, apart from comp.windows.news? I guess so.

Unfortunately, Sun killed NeWS and doesn't seem interested in doing anything
smart (like releasing it under an X-like license) to revive it.

(NeWS, DomainOS,... (hums) all the lonely software, where does it all go to...)

That, unfortunately, seems to be true.

There is no official word out of Sun yet, but with the recent deal
with Adobe to "integrate Display PostScript into the Solaris
environment" there can be little doubt about it.

This is (to cite a fine Jagger & Richards song) Sad, Sad, Sad. NeWS
was such a fine idea and had some many good points. NeWS is dead. May
its ideas live and prosper.

This morning's junk mail included a catalogue from a bookseller which
reminded me that NeWS (well, xnews) is officially part of System V r 4,
and therefore not only AT&T but a lot of other people have it too.
Given the way standards seem to devolve, maybe people will start
compiling this strange beast when they port UNIX to their products,
now that Sun have dropped it:-)
