Hello, world. I was hoping someone here could provide me with information on converting Postscript to HPGL, on a Sun Sparc 2. (4.1.x) If you have any such information, please E-mail your responses to me. I will summarize, if there is any need. Thanks, of course, in advance. -- Scott McClung SAIC mcclung@archimedes.chinalake.navy.mil (setq std-disclaimer "I speak only for myself")

You didn't mention why you would want to do such a thing. HPGL has nowhere
near the power of PostScript. There are no fonts, etc.
Personally I believe that trying to put PostScript onto a HPGL device is a
big step backward. If you have a SS2, you should have a PostScript printer.

There are no fonts, etc. Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize my motives were important. Well, Vidiot, let's suppose I happen to have an HP pen plotter, for the sake of argument, that needs HPGL as input. Also, for laughs, let's suppose I need to output D-size maps, and not, let's say, pretty PS fonts on 8.5x11 or 11x17 paper. (Hmm, a problem. I'll post, and see if I can get some clues from the net folks. Maybe, if I'm real lucky, Vidiot will post, and enlighten me.) >Personally I believe that trying to put PostScript onto a HPGL device is a >big step backward. If you have a SS2, you should have a PostScript printer. Well, we do, a couple in fact. Thank you for your obvious concern, though. Unfortunately, neither of them support D-size output. I have yet to work with a PS printer that does. Imagine that. Ah, but if I convert our PostScript to HPGL, then I can use it to drive our HP pen plotter. Problem solved. (I believe the stock answer is ghostscript, though the version I have *always* prints one page per file, not directly directable to the spooler via stdout. The results look good, but I wasn't too happy with the process I had to go through to get it from PS to file to printer. Fortunately, I've since obtained access to a PS printer. I've not read the FAQ recently myself.) In article <4825@vidiot.UUCP> brown@vidiot.UUCP (Vidiot) writes: >You didn't mention why you would want to do such a thing. Duh, maybe because he already has a 300 dpi laser printer and hopes that he can conserve precious landfill space by finding a way to use it with newer software? >HPGL has nowhere near the power of PostScript. There are no fonts, etc. The PS _language_ is a lot more powerful. The proper software on a workstation, however, should be able to produce the same arrangement of those 300 dpi on an HPGL printer as would a printer with on-board PS. >big step backward. If you have a SS2, you should have a PostScript printer. Down with the categorical imperative! Given that you feel so strongly about it, why don't _you_ buy him one? ;-) BTW, what's a PS cartrige cost for an HP printer, and what's the lowest/oldest model that can accept it? That might be his best answer. -- Ken Hardy ken@bridge.com (racerx!ken)

Plotters do not come as matrix printers - that is until recently, until the invention of bubble jet plotters :-) >>You didn't mention why you would want to do such a thing. One reason I can give you - not the original poster of the question: One of my programs sorts through tons of data and produces ugly looking PS output. I've a CAD program, which eats HPGL. That would allow me to import the data, then edit the final looking of a plot before sending it to a PS printer again. MAy be an awful way. May be I should resort to scissors and glue... >Down with the categorical imperative! I seem to recall (from a LJ IV manual) that there are commands for Bezier curves. But then, you still need the technical refman because the users' manual doesn't explain how to actually use the commands.
