public domain type1 PostScript fonts

Dear PostScript fans,

I am loooking at the various kinds of public domain PostScript type 1
fonts, one can find on the internet.

Using archie I could find the mac archive at umich (and several places
mirroring that archive), but all those sites carry the fonts in mac
Binhexed, compacted (sit, cit,...) formats. As we are using Unix
platforms, (on top of hundreds of Mac's and PC), we need to generate the
pfa or pfb forms of those fonts. As I would not like to spend several
hours before a mac to unpack those hundreds of fonts, to decide which
ones are worthwhile (please do not flame me for not bying professional
fonts, we have bought for several 1000 USD worth of fonts from Adobe),
it would be nice to know whether some site does not carry them in pfa
or pfb format already.

Thanks for your help.

Michel Goossens
