I thought I'd post this here since I frequent this group and have seen
others talk about the LaserJet 4.

I recently upgraded from a LaserJet III with the HP PostScript cartridge
to a brand new LaserJet 4. I initially had some problems getting the
PS to work since I was trying to use my HP PS cartridge from my LJIII.
Anyway, after installing the PS SIMM option and 4MB of memory I was ready
to start using the printer.

Within the first 15 pages through the printer I had a paper jam, 41.3 to
be exact. After opening the back of the printer I found that the first
page started and about 2 inches later there was a second page coming
through at the same time. I dismissed this first jam as a fluke and
starting trying ppst, pcal, Word Perfect, etc.

To make a long story short I have been having a terrible time with the
paper on this printer. I've tried other paper and it doesn't seem to
make much if any difference. I've never had a jam when using the MP
tray so I suspect it's a problem with the drastic turns the paper makes
when leaving the bottom tray. I should mention that I might have had
one or two paper jams with my LJIII.

I've heard from friends that this is a known problem with the LJ4. I
called HP and asked what it could be and got the standard "it must be
the paper or your environment" answer. I could always return the
printer for another but don't know if that's the problem.

Now, just to justify the existance of this message in this newsgroup,
the printer is really nice. 600dpi, autoswitching PS/PCL (with no
drivers like the LJIII) and *much* faster PS. PPST Index is as
follows: PPST-G 12.5, PPST-R 26.1, PPST-M 6.2 for an overall of 12.0.

Are there any comments on this printer?

You need to make sure that the two little metal levers for the fuser rollers
are flicked 'down' in the back of the machine. If you don't do this, the
fuser rollers don't make good contact. They are shipped in the 'up' position
for transport.
