SUMMARY: Setting PostScript printer configuration

(My original question revolved around configuring a LaserWriter II NTR without
a Mac. The answer is actually generic to PostScript printers in general).

To change settings on a PostScript printer, create a file with the following
contents and print it to the printer:

serverdict begin 0 exitserver
statusdict begin
COMMAND
end

Where COMMAND is one of:

false setdostartpage	- to turn OFF the power-on banner page
true setdostartoage	- to turn ON the power-on banner page

n setpapertray - where n is an integer

Unfortunately, different printers use different numbering schemes for their
trays. On my LaserWriter II NTX, the built-in tray is 1 and the optional
paper cartridge is 2.

Also note that these are PostScript Level 1 commands that are included in
PostScript Level 2 for compatibility - PL2 uses different commands.

You could of course do these commands interactively instead.

Many thanks to Kurt Hangaard Marcussen <khm@cs.jt.dk> for his explanation
on the paper tray settings. Thanks also to an Adobe employee (whose mail
I have lost, sorry) for a more general discussion on printer settings.
In particular, he informed me that most of this information is in Chapter 4
of the Adobe PostScript Language Reference Manual, 2nd Edition.
