As people have been pointing you to overly complicated databases, let
me give you a perhaps overly simple one:

			EXCEL

I have a file of 4000 records (rows) in an ASCII flat file I keep at
work. I wanted better access than 'search', 'grep', and the like.
So I moved the file to a disk and took it home. In just a few
minutes I had a complete database. (A half hour?) I can sort it
by any combination of fields. I can do simple 'finds' using the
FORM command. I can also use that to enter or edit records. I
use a capability called CRITERIA to set up fairly complex selects
and the records that match the criteria are copied out to peruse
as I see fit.

To satisfy your FORTRAN needs, just pull the data out into a
flat file: tab or space delimited.

We use Oracle at work. Oracle is incredibly complicated.
(Sure, it's gigabytes so Excel won't work.)

If you want to design a GUI browswer, you have a fair GUI language
on Excel. I have not personally used it. But, what you get right
out of the box with no work is, to me, impressive.

Good luck,
