OOPSLA'92 Workshop: APPLICATIONS OF SMALLTALK IN SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING COMPUTATION Date: Oct. 18, 1992 Location: Vancouver, BC (in conjunction with OOPSLA'92) Use of Smalltalk for simulation was an important goal for its original designers, but its application to "real" scientific and engineering simulation and modeling has been relatively rare. Modern Smalltalk systems have removed many barriers to its use for scientific computing. Smalltalk's graphical interface and its facilities for protoyping and reuse offer much for scientific computing. The purpose of this workshop is discussion of how to improve Smalltalk as an environment for scientific computation. We will consider performance, portability, numeric support problems, and the need for "standardized" scientific support classes and protocols. Areas of interest include Smalltalk classes that support advanced computer architectures, implementations of graphics and visualization systems, scientific data bases, scientific and engineering simulations, and data acquisition and control. Of particular interest are objects as models for scientific and engineering phenomena. 10 - 15 participants will be chosen on the basis of a 500 - 1000 word position paper. The morning session will be devoted to 10 minute participant presentations and discussion. In the afternoon, small working groups will invent and refine specifications for objects common to scientific Smalltalk applications. These specifications and a process for implementing them will be the visible result of the workshop. Prospective participants should submit position papers prior to Aug 15, 1992. Selected participants will be notified by Sept. 15, 1992. Submit to: Dr. Richard L. Peskin Rutgers University CAIP Center Box 1390 CoRE Bldg.
