Vertical short streaks from IBM LaserPrinter E

I have an 8-month old IBM LaserPrinter E, and have recently noticed that
it has been making small vertical streaks on some page. They tend to be
about 1 centimeter long and about 0.1 mm to 3mm wide. They aren't uniform
in any way. Most pages don't have them at all, some pages just have one,
some pages have up to 3 or 4. They tend to be near the center of the
page, but are not all vertically aligned.

Any ideas as to what is causing this, and what to do about it?
