Configuration Management - A question

Does anyone out there have any pointers as to how to cope with
configuration management/version control within large CAD systems supported
by a relational database. I believe this is currently a popular research
area in many Universities.

(This is not source-code conrol, but actual version control of the objects
which are used in the disign process).

Thanks for any information you may have (please e-mail responses).

Regards,

   Dave Chalmers
