Dr. Len Bruton is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the
University of Calgary where he carries out research on the applications of
multidimensional digital filters in the field of image processing. He has
published extensively on the theory and design of microelectronic filters and
is the inventor of widely used industrial filters, including FDNR filters and
LDI filters. His current work on multidimensional filters can be used for
image compression and enhancement.
He has served as Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Dean of
Engineering at the University of Calgary, Dean of Engineering at the
University of Victoria and Chairman of the National Committee of Deans of
Engineering and Applied Science. He is currently the University Centre
Coordinator and founder of the University of Calgary Centre of Excellence in
Microelectronics which is part of the Federally-funded MICRONET network.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a past winner of the ASEE Teaching Award of the
Pacific North West Section, of the national 1991 Manning Award for Innovation
and of the Provincial 1992 Alberta Science and Technology Award for Innovation
in Science. He is also the recipient of a 1993 Commemorative Medal for the
125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation for contributions to Canada.
Ann Carlsen obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree (1970) from the University of
Windsor and her law degree from Queen's University (LL.B., 1974). In 1983 she
graduated from Western New England College (M.Sc.), and went on to obtain her
second law degree at Suffolk University (J.D., 1988). Ms. Carlsen is called
to the Bar of Massachusetts, the Federal Court of the United States, and the
Bar of British Columbia. Since 1990, she has been with Swinton & Company, in
Vancouver, B.C. where she acts for clients on matters relating to the
acquisition, protection, enforcement, transfer and licensing of patents,
trademarks, copyrights, integrated circuit topographies, and trade secrets.
In particular, she is experienced in intellectual property issues as they
relate to software developers and high technology companies.
Ms. Carlsen is a member of the Computer Law Association. She is also an
affiliate member of the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada, and sits on
their Editorial Board and Publications Committee and Computer Law Committee.

2:00 - 5:00 pm
Tutorial 2: Formal Verification
Designing complex digital systems in VLSI technology usually involves working
at several levels of abstraction, ranging from very high level behavioral
specifications down to physical layout. One of the main difficulties in this
process is to verify the consistency of the different levels of abstraction.
Simulation is typically used as the main tool for RcheckingS the consistency
and despite extensive simulation efforts, serious design errors often remain
undetected.
Consequently, there has been a growing interest in using formal methods to
verify design correctness. This tutorial will provide an overview of the
various formal hardware verification approaches and discuss their strengths
and weaknesses. Two approaches (symbolic model checking, symbolic trajectory
evaluation), now mature enough to be used in practice, will be discussed in
greater detail.
Instructors: Dr. Edmund M. Clarke, Jr., received a B.A. in Mathematics from
the University of Virginia in 1967, an M.A. in Mathematics from Duke
University in 1968, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in
1976. In 1982, he became an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Dept.
at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. He is now a Professor in the
School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon.
Dr. Clarke is on the editorial boards of Distributed Computing, Journal of
Logic and Computation, and Formal Methods in System Design. His interests
include hardware and software verification, programming languages, parallel
algorithms, automatic theorem proving, and symbolic computation.
Dr. Carl Seger received his M.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Chalmer's
University in Technology, Sweden, in 1985, and his M.Math and Ph.D. degrees in
Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in 1986 and 1988
respectively. After two years as Research Associate at Carnegie Mellon
University, he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer
Science at the University of British Columbia. In 1991 he became co-director
of the Integrated Systems Design Laboratory and in 1992 he became a Fellow of
the Advanced Systems Institute.
Dr. Seger's main research interests are formal methods for system design and
verification.
