Problem creating lock file

I'm attempting to get elm running on an Evans & Sutherland machine.
It is essentially a MIPS machine and OS frolm what I can gather.
I finally managed to get elm compiled, but when I try to run it,
I get the following message:

Can't create lock file! Need write permission in "/usr/mail/".

The mail directory has the following permissions:

drwxrwxr-x bin mail /usr/mail

and I ran Configure to be setgid. (In fact, I tried running it as
non-setgid as well trying to figure out what was wrong.) The only
other thing that I could think of to try was only using one of flock
or fcntrl locking, but that didn't help either. Anybody get it running
on one of these machines?

There was one thing that happened during Configure that I hadn't seen
while running on Suns and SGIs. Immediately after Configure looks for
tzname() and tzname_(), I got the following message:

Configure: 262 Memory fault - core dumped

Configure continued after this message and everything ran apparently
normally. Is this something that is expected and could it have something
to do with my locking problems?

You must be root to install Elm, so that elm gets installed setgid
and set to group mail. Check the permissions on Elm.

I was root when I installed it. The permissions on Elm are

-rwxr-sr-x 1 root mail 685924 Jan 26 14:22 elm

which looks right for a setgid program.

True MIPs machines cannot do gid swapping, and I think E&S machines
will be the same. You need to change the $d_savegrpmboxid answer in
COnfigure to be $undef

	I had the same problem on a HP/Apollo running BSD4.3. I just
change the "setgid" calls to "setegid" calls and it worked
fine. This function change only the effective GID and not
	both of them.

BTW, the easy way to do that is to #define setgid setegid
in the master include file (config.h if I remember).

Check if /usr is NFS-mounted with the nosuid-flag (grep usr /etc/fstab)
