Password protect email client

Hi all,

I'm trying to find an email client that will allow for a password
protect of the emails which are stored on the Mac that I have. ie, won't
allow any old user who comes across the machine to fire it up & look at
the inbox/outbox, etc. I realise IMAP is an option, but we want to be
able to access the email when offline too. There doesn't need to be
encryption, just something to stop the computer-barely-literate from
opening the emails.

This is for my father, so I'm looking for something not too complicated.
ie, no separate encryption with PGP or Norton Encrypt, etc. Just an
email program that wants a password when fired up.

We currently use OS 8.1, Eudora 4.2.2. I've looked at Outlook Express &
can't find Claris Emailer to see if that will do it for us.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Kwan.

Don't know about password-protected email clients, but...

Since you mentioned PGP, an easy way I've used to secure my email is to
use a PGPDisk and put the Eudora Mail folder on that disk. Takes one
passphrase to open the disk, then use as normal.

I then wrote a little applescript to open the disk, wait for the
passphrase to be entered, then fire up Eudora, all on one (double)click.

This sounds good. My girlfriend's work computer is used by others in her
lab, though the Eudora on it is hers soley. I help her out with computer
stuff, but I'm just a good end user and not an expert. I've never
written a script. Would you mind sharing your PGPDisk/Eudora script,
please?

How is the placement of the Eudora folder handled? An alias is made of
the folder once the folder is moved to the PGPDisk? She'd be running
this on OS 8.1.

Many thanks,
Chris

You can use the Script Editor's Record function, but mine came out
something like this (the PGP disk is named Email Disk):

-- Startup Eudora
-- - need to mount Email Disk if not already mounted
tell application "Finder"
-- Check to see if Email Disk is not mounted, and mount if necessary
if not (exists disk "Email Disk") then
-- Email Disk is a PGP Disk. Insert your path here:
open file "Email Disk" of folder "PGP Disks" of startup disk
-- Now loop until Email Disk has been successfully loaded
-- otherwise the script will try to open Eudora before
-- the Email disk pass phrase has been entered.
repeat until (exists disk "Email Disk")
      end repeat
   end if
   -- Now open Eudora
open file "Eudora Settings" of folder "Eudora Mail Folder" of disk
"Email Disk"
end tell

Note: from 'open file "Eudora Settings"' to 'of disk "Email Disk"' is
one line.

My Eudora App file is not on the encrypted disk. My entire Eudora Mail
folder is on the encrypted disk, and I put an alias to the Eudora Mail
folder (with the name "Eudora Folder") in the system folder.

After making sure it works, do a "save as" on the above script as a
run-only applet, and put it wherever it is convenient.

You may email me directly if you need more explanation.

HTH.

Thanks a lot, J.E. I won't have a chance to try this for a week or so,
I think. If I run into any trouble, I'll give you a buzz. I appreciate
it!

How about using a screensaver with password protection? That's a simple
way to protect the info on your Mac and would seem to solve your
problem...

Unless you specifically want to secure the mail but leave the rest of
the machine open, that is.

I used to use Outlook Express 4.5, and that had password protection on the
client.

Not sure about version 5.

While probably easy to avoid if you knew what you were doing it would
certainly scare away any beginners.

Yes, that's precisely what I'm after.

No, I can't seem to find it in version 5 anywhere.

That's all I need in this house. :)

There is an easy way for this kind of problem. If you have a Zip
drive (or something similar) attached to the Mac, you can have the
different users storing their mail folder on their own Zip cartridge.

Fair enough. I'll float this idea with Dad & see what he thinks, along
with the others.

Busy waiting is usually a bad idea; instead, in my otherwise almost
identical script, I do:

        tell application "PGPdisk"
                activate
                with timeout of 24 * 60 * 60 seconds
                        open (alias "GraySystem:Documents:Eudora")
                end timeout
                quit
        end tell

which will wait for a day for the passphrase to be entered (hopefully
enough :-)

I agree, much better. I've just never been bit, because I rarely leave
ANYthing I do with PGP waiting. Think I'll go back and modify that old
code (it was my first foray into AS).
