Eudora "Out box table of contents changed" What does it mean?

Can somebody help me? Every so often Eudora 3 produces a message saying
that the Out Mailbox table of contents has been changed. It gives me the
option to "Create New" or "Use Old". Clicking "Create New" causes a total
freeze, necessitating a restart of my Mac, while "Use Old" causes me to
loose recently written queued mesages. What cuases this? What can I do?

I'm using Eudora 3 Lite on a Performa 5200 with Demon (SMTP account).
Addamil handles incoming SMTP mail, distributing it to multiple "Eudora
Settings" files on my hard disc. I also use the Kanji plug-in extension
for Japanese text.

Somehow the outbox got corrupted. Copy the contents of it into a fresh
mailbox, quit Eudora, go into your Eudora Folder and throw away the Out
mailbox. Start Eudora and it will create a new one. Transfer all your
out mail back into the new Out box.

If it continues, please let me know, and send me a copy of the corrupted
Out box (stuffed).

I've found that this is repeatable by making a copy of a mailbox (e.g.,
backup and restore or move top another disk). I've not yet seen Eudora lose
a message through the "Use Old" button.

Thank-you Gary

Alan also gave me a lot of help on this one (Thanks Alan). It seems the
Out-box became corrupted because my default (but little used) "postmaster"
settings was still set to use old style ".toc" files, while various other
"user" settings were all set to use the resource fork. (Silly Me!).

The corruption happened every time I opened the "postmaster" settings,
checking for stray articles that might have found their way there.
