SMTP through RS-232??

We're running Sendmail on a 4.2bsd system. Do correctly
understand that the only medium that Sendmail understands
for sending mail via SMTP is a TCP/IP connection? Is
there software available that can talk SMTP through a
serial line (let's say a hard-wire link from Unix to
a friendly VMS machine)?

Thanks, as they say, in advance.
