Thanks. This finally prompted a reply from the ISP.

They finally admitted to shutting down my in-mail
because it was spawning too many processes.

I have a few ideas what might be causing it, but I'm not sure.

Prime suspect is that I used to use
alias frog ' "doggie ribbit MD" <qwax@bekequax.com> '
but now it tries to mail to
 doggie@localhost
 ribbit@localhost
 MD@localhost
and off course generates errors

I've tried changing '' to `', changing ' to " and " to ' and so forth..
nothing.. If that's the only problem, I'm willing to give up putting text
names in my alias file if this is the cause of the problem

Interesting clue:

I looked at /var/spool/mail to compare my mail file size to other users (it
wasn't very different) and found about 2500 one or zero bit files owned by me
there and named beginning with an underscore, then some random sequence of
numbers and letters then the mail server name. I deleted these. This problem
had also appeared a month or so ago when they had again shut down my in-mail
(but then, and several other times this year, without any explanation)

Now, I can guess that I received 2500 e-mails total in the past month, maybe,
but the other people with similar files there had way too few for them to be
caused by their just receiving e-mail. Probably the user with the most such
files had about ten. I don't think I sent OUT that many e-mails.

maybe I can just put "rm /var/spool/mail/_*tam" in my login profile?
(The other folks obviously didn't give me permission, so their files won't
get deleted, I hope, right?)

This is very interestinkggkgkgkg..

might the new version of mailx have been configured some way to cause this (I
am probably the only one on the ISP still using the BSD standard mailx
program) (About a month ago, thanks to tips from here on usenet, they did fix
my missing header problem)

How does mailx behave when you interrupt it with ctl-c or ctl-z or you get
disconnected? Might this be it? Even that can't be responsible for 2500
times, can it?

I've also been unable to control a lot of subscriptions (which refuse to
recognise me) because of the way server names have been changed around
(eg: vjp2@tam.dorsai.org vjp2@eachan.dorsai.org vjp2@amanda.dorsai.org)
