Greetings: As a senator in the UMASS Amherst Student Government Association, I've been asked to do a quick informal survey about University e-mail policies. This is in preparation for an SGA bill which may give all students attending UMASS Amherst free access to basic internet e-mail or campus-wide e-mail services. Anyone who has ever seen this kind of policy at their institutions would help us a great deal if they could give us a brief description of what programs are available and how they were formed. A few of the questions we are most interested in are: 1) Does your institution give free computer services to all students? 2) Do students have access to the Internet or just a LAN? 3) What percentage of the people who have ready access to e-mail use this service regularly -- and how many professors use e-mail to improve the quality of their classes? 4) What other services are offered at your institution? 5) What level of support is available for dial-in computing and how many terminal rooms/terminals do you have? Please send answers to julin@ecs.umass.edu. Thank you very much, -- Brian S. Julin Senator (Commuter Area) Student Government Association, The University of Massachusetts at Amherst Amherst, MA 01003
