Processing a queue to a particular SMTP host

Is there any way (in sendmail, MMDF or any other MTA) to force the
outgoing SMTP mail queue to be processed for a particular host?

The company I work for has around 10 branch offices, which connect to its
computer system via modems using SLIP, for transfer of email. Each branch
office calls in once an hour or so to pick up mail.

We currently have MMDF (on an SCO system) set up to process the mail queue
every minute. As it scans each message it attempts to make a call to the
SMTP port of the receiving system. If the system is not connected, then
the call fails after 30-60 seconds, before going on to the next message.
This procedure causes the processing of the mail queue to take ages, and
means that a remote system needs to stay connected for a long time to be
sure of receiving its queued messages.

Can anyone suggest a way around this problem?

We'd like the branch systems to be able to call in and then somehow start
up a mail queue run just for their messages.

We are open to switching mailers if necessary, though would prefer to
stick with MMDF if possible.

Thanks for any help.

Please email replies. I'll post a summary if there's interest.

SUNOS 4.1.3 sendmail has a flag to allow mail to be flushed according
to a particular string in the to: filed. Demon use this I beleive to
flush SMTP mail when their dial up IP customers come on line.

I don't think it is standard sendmail tho. You might do worse than
grab the latset sendmail sources. Doubtless comp.mail.sendmail is
the right plcae to post this...
