Apparently there is >work under way to figure out how PEM should interact with MIME. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that the discussion going on in the PEM/MIME arena has to do with encoding MIME, not with sending PEM wrapped up in a MIME header. However, that idea occurred to me as well and a couple of us are actually using it locally with RIPEM. It should work very similarly for PGP. Simply put, write the message somewhere, encrypt it (I like to pipe the vi buffer through ripem, so I never actually store the cleartext anywhere) and save it to a temporary file. Then using whatever composition tool you have handy, convince your mailer to send the encrypted message, without any additional encoding (type 7bit), under a Content-Type: application/ripem header (you could also add that header manually, since the file needs no other encrypting). In Elm, the mailer I use, you can use [include filename application/ripem] On the receiving end, set up your mailcap with something like the following: application/ripem; ripem -d ; copiousoutput Your MIME-compliant mailer will happily run the message through ripem, which will ask you for your private key password and decode it. I never really worked with PGP but I think the only modification is to make sure that the message is armored, and change the command in the mailcap to 'pgp %s ; copiousoutput'. Realizing that this is only a nasty hack until all the mailers understand PEM, it nonetheless seems to make the other users here much happier. Comments? Ideas? Obvious mistakes? ;) Bill.
