MIME and xmh

I recently posted a message to the mh and few X releated groups about
MIME and xmh -- but I did not get much response -- I did not know this
group existed then -- May be comp.mail.multi-media will prove
more fruitful.

My question is: Is anyone working on a fully MIME compatible version
of xmh. The idea being that xmh would interpret a MIME message and
display the body parts as icons which when hit with the mouse button
would play the audio or display a image. Certain body parts (eg
richtext or gifs?) could be actually show in xmh itself by usings
a different widget or something. A grander solution might be to
invent a multi-media widget.

I have been told that the next version of mh (not xmh) will be MIME
compatable (but I don't know what that means - maybe just the fix
to call metamail ?). I also know that quite abit of work is being
done at MIT to incorperate multi-media into X.

Can anybody fill me in on plans/work in progress. If nothing is
happening, I'm think of doing it myself.

Please mail me or this newsgroup if of general interest since I shall be
reading it from on.

Martyn

BTW If this is a FAQ I beg your forgiveness.

Some time ago I played with the idea of using Wcl to replace all of
the functionality of Xmh. I currently use Axe (with hacks) as my Xmh
editor/whatnow, but want things like word wrap, indentation, spell
checker, etc... and possibly the implementation of MIME (seperate
pop-ups for displaying parts of a message, a special Import dialog
box for incorperating non-text files and a sendproc filter that
ensures that the message is properly formatted). It's not what I
get paid for, so I'm not planning to do it anytime soon.

It is at least possible to incorperate MIME viewing into xmh (for
viewing) by using your Xdefaults to attach a program (shell script?)
to a button so that when it's pressed, the current message can be
passed through mhn(1) for various parts of a message. As for
inputting files/images/rtf into a MIME message for sending, you need
to use a better editor with your Xmh before you can do that. I chose
Axe because it was easily customizable (yet, people rag on me for not
preferring vi or emacs).

What an excellent idea! Sounds a bit like how Microsoft Mail works on PCs.
Does anyone have a realistic view on when such nice fronts ends will be
available on unix systems?

I agree to this and actually trying to throw together a widget set
from various existing software. I am approaching the problem from
bottom up and not making a single "multi-media widget". Instead, I am
trying to build a widget for each content type. So far I have just
been able to get prototype of Raster Image widget and working on
multifont ISO2022 text widget now (I approach the problem from ODA
direction, so I have not yet tackled any tagged text contents, but as
ISO202 + ANSI control sequences for effects are implemented, it
wouldn't be a big job to convert rich text into such byte stream and
feed to widget). The raster widget currently takes GIF, JPEG/JFIF and
TIFF (using Sam Leflers tifflib v3.1 and jpegsrc.v3 libraries).

I am hoping to get my hands on some MPEG source code that runs on Unix
(actually Sun IPX) so that I could mold into video widget. Actually,
would be interested in hearing ideas how such could be built, as there
might be multiple instances of such widget running simultaneously.

No plans yet how to make widgets for Postscript and CGM. Maybe, if the
author of Ghostscript package turned a widget version out of it?

While back I posted a notice about this into comp.window.x under title
new data presentation widget set (Xew). It is still uncertion what the
status of this work is, because I am doing it on EuroBridge (RACE
2008) project.
