Slightly off topic, but has anyone made mods to rn and other common newsreaders to support MIME body parts? An increasing number of the mailing lists I follow are being gatewayed to Usenet newsgroups, and I'd like to continue to have the functionality of a MIME-cognizant tool for news. Pointers to code extremely welcome -- and I'll take "go ahead, go for it" too. -- David Boyes dboyes@rice.edu

The metamail software -- available from thumper.bellcore.com in the directory pub/nsb -- can easily be patched into existing mail or news readers. The next release of metamail will include a patch for trn, but nobody has yet sent me a patch for rn. In general, the patches for different mail and news readers written in C are almost identical; for anyone who knows the rn code and who has a copy of the metamail patches for other C-based mail or news programs, it should take only a few hours to write and debug an rn patch. The existing patches are contained in the file "mailers.txt" in the metamail distribution. Anyone implementing patches for rn or other additional mail or news readers is encouraged to send me the patch for incorporation into a future release. The next release is coming some time in December, so you'll have to act fast if you want to get your rn patch into it! -- Nathaniel
