rambling questions:showpartial, Sun OW3, DOS

I am pretty new to this MIME stuff, but I've got a need to
use metamail as a standalone program--I need to send
multi-media mail to people who have no control over the
mail system, so they will save their mail to a file and then
run metamail on it.

Problem 1:
So, Im havving some trouble with the showpartial script. I am
currently testing on a Sparc. I'm using
	metamail p1 p2 p3
for a three-part message saved to three files. showpartial writes the
"FULL" file and then executes metamail on it, but I never see anything
except the warning that the full file is now being deleted, etc.
Is this a common problem? Am I doing something stupid?

Problem/Question 2:
Also, The Sun Sparc (Openwindows 3) seems to be mime-compliant, but when
I compose with the "mailto" program that is part of the metamail
distribution, the Sun mailtool displays everything as text, including
the image and audio files. I don't see any documentation so far about
the MIME capability of the Sun mailtool--can anyone out there help?
I have no documentation on OW3.0, unfortunately.

Problem 3:
Finally, can anyone help with pointers to a metamail that will
work on the Mac? I've got the ones for Unix, Dos, and Amiga.

Problem 4:
I've got the metamail exec for DOS with an appropriate mailcap and
some progs for handling GIFs and audio files. When I try
	metamail sample.one
(sample.one is a sample mime messge) I get the header and then
the message "metamail Out of Memory!"
Any hints on this one?

Sorry for the rambling, I've got a lot of questions and a deadline
looming :-(

Thanks in advance,

1. You say you do this as "metamail p1 p2 p3". Does the same problem
happen when you do "metamail p1; metamail p2; metamail p3"? This would
be the more usual way to do it. Either way it is a bug, but I'm trying
to pin the problem down a little better...

2. OpenWindows Mailtool 3.0 is *NOT* MIME-conformant. It uses a format
that is similar to, but different from, MIME. I have heard strong
indications that the next version of this tool will be MIME-smart, but I
don't think there's been any official committement from Sun.

3. MIME-smart versions of Eudora and Maelstrom are reportedly in the
pipeline. I don't think anyone has ported the metamail code to the Mac
because the basic interface paradigm is so different as to make the code
less directly useful there than on other platforms.

4. Maybe metamail really is out of memory. If you can trace it (either
with a debugger or by turning on metamail debugging, e.g. with MM_DEBUG)
we can figure out where & why it is running out.

I hope these answers are at least a little bit helpful... -- Nathaniel
