  Might I suggest that the code from USEnet news (a) does this well and
(b) is public domain? When inventing the wheel it's nice to know that
you can start with something round.

  This will still take some work, but it has a lot of code which works
using many nasty formats. Perhaps rn would be a good place to look, also.
