The archive on cse.ogi.edu is now up-to-date.  In the tar.Z file I have
included a subdirectory "fixed" which has the patched versions of lock.c
and xcreat.c (affects you only if you use DOT_LOCK).

What flavor of "patch" are you using?  Patch does try to be clever and
check files out of RCS if it can't find them in the desired directory
to be patched.  Did you follow the instructions in the patch and use

    patch -N -p1 < file

??  Otherwise it may be attempting to patch the wrong copy of makefile.sys.v.
