1) To enable hyperlinks in email, I set configuration entry

  sending-filters=[path]/changemimetype _TMPFILE_ _MIMETYPE_

2) File <changemimetype> comprises four statements:

  proc main
  #!/bin/sh
  echo -n "Content-Type:text/html" > $2
  endproc

3) The arrangement displeases UNIX pine. When I issue ^X
Send and accept to have message filtered, pine first says
"Filter command returned error," then "Problem filtering!
Nothing sent or saved to fcc." It happens with or without
HTML tags in the message.

4) How to fix it? TIA for any help!

:) Send and accept to have message filtered,

Unless you have a very good reason to keep the first and last line of your
script there, I would remove them and repeat the process.

Eduardo: I lied. Thanks for smoking me out.

There were more than the four statements listed below. The
others were UNIX comments (preceded by semicolons) intended
as inline documentation. Those comments stumped pine.

Stripped down to the second and third of the four statements
(as you suggested), the filter works. Much obliged ...

What shell uses semicolons instead of # just for grins? Not the /bin/sh
you had in the example, I bet.

Programming without software engineering is like sculpting with a chain
saw. The very talented can produce a work of art, the mediocre wind up with
a misshapen lump in a pile of rubble, and in neither case does the end
result have more than a passing resemblance to the original intent.
