Hi, I would like to define an output filter in PINE that passed the e-mail about to be sent to some sort of shell script that would then tag on a randomly selected quote on to the end of the mail (hence a random quote in a signature). Does anybody have an idea of how I would do this? E-mailed responses would be very much appreciated. Does anybody have an idea of how I would do this? Best bet would be to have a cron job that rotated your .sig, maybe with a stub at the top plus quote underneath, or perl script that merged the two... if you can cope with that rotating at a fixed frequency regardless of your mailing rate, that might suffice. Or you can set up a named-pipe called ~/.sig with a random-quote-generator pushing junk in one end, so when pine reads it out t'other end, it gets a new quote every time. (Make the random-quote-generator run out of your shell startup script so interactive logins make it check for existence of a listener on the fifo and establish one if need be.) > E-mailed responses would be very much appreciated. Hi what you could do is mkfifo .signature in you home directory then while [ 1 ] ; do echo "MY funky quote" > .signature ; done On Wed, 31 Jan 2001 19:26:36 +0000, Mark A Miles <maxm@tardis.ed.ac.uk> wrote: >Hi, > >I would like to define an output filter in PINE that passed the e-mail >about to be sent to some sort of shell script that would then tag on a >randomly selected quote on to the end of the mail (hence a random quote in >a signature). There's a better solution - signify is a Perl script which takes a signature
description file (~/.signify) and opens a FIFO on ~/.signature. Then every
time a program reads .signature it produces a signature following the rules
in .signify, which allows stuff like random quotes with different
probabilities etc. Thus the signature below is defined as three columns, one
aligned left with fixed content (the figlet logo), one centred with fixed
content (name, email, URL) and one aligned right with randomly chosen
content (the quote); the whole thing always takes up 76 characters in width
(hence the extra spaces at the start).
The only source I'm aware of for signify is the Debian project - look in the
Packages section of http://www.debian.org/ for signify, there will be a
source package. I've got it on Tardis but I can't remember whether it's in
my home directory or properly installed...

(but not by much) I suppose the worst thing about VB is it's very much "black box" programming; it hides an awful lot of the under-the-bonnet goings on. Angus
