I've had the same problem. I tried to use sendmail with our generic
sendmail.cf which we use on our Sequent Balance 8000 and all our
HP9000/[78]?? machines, but got stuck on the rebuild of the aliasfile,
it always complaint that the users weren't local to this machine.
I suspect the shadow password routines are messing things up (we are
running PTX 1.4.0).

And so did we. We installed smail and tried to add add some MX records
which point to our domain-mail-master, but this confused our
domain-mail-master in such a way that I had to remove the MX records
again. I now use a small shell script (with the queryprogram driver)
as temporary solution.

I know that this isn't the solution you were hoping for, but maybe
this is a hint for the smail developpers that there may be something
wrong with the bind driver.
