No. It's free software, but David Harris, the author has not released it into
the public domain. There is a difference....

We use Pegasus Mail here, and I (being the network admin) like it a lot.

No, Pegasus doesn't talk directly to to SMTP--it requires a gateway of
some kind; I know of two available; they are also free software.

Assuming the Mercury gateway is in use, it does work this way. The 
other gateway, Charon, requires a separate dedicated PC--but it also
offers other features (regretably, Charon seems to be totally without
support these days).

I like the setup too; everyone should thank David many times for
the software he's produced.

What the original poster needs is Pegasus Mail in combination with
the Mercury gateway; both are available from risc.ua.edu in the
/pub/pegasus directory (I think that's the right directory); this is
one of the official release sites. It is on many other ftp sites...
