Is it possible that you're running into the bug in IBM's 3.2.xx and 4.1
named?  They have a problem with "negative caching" of CNAME records,
which will cause mail to MX'd hosts to bounce every now and then (and then
mysteriously start working just as you get around to investigating it).
Call your IBM rep and ask them about PMR# 4x360.

An easy way to test for this problem is to use a non-AIX system as your
name server, or set up the latest release of BIND on your AIX system
instead of the IBM named.
