Take following as a generic comment based on my SVR4 experience.
Sendmail 8 usually has trouble to work fine with System V resolver
libraries. On the platforms I tested this, it gave unpredictable
and random results. A part for the fact that many System V
gethostbyname() system calls don't return the official hostname in
h_name (which already confuses Sendmail) like it should be, the
resolver seems to put the process in an unkown state. Sometimes the
SMTP server can process a few (2-3) messages, and then either crashes
or gives garbled SMTP dialog outputs, clearly indicating that
some memory has been corrupter.

Up to know, using the Bind 4.9 (4.8.3 should also be okay) resolver
library has proven to provide a stable solution.  Now setting up
the 4.9 resolver on system V machines is also a random work.
