Maybe you mismatched mailboxes formats somewhere.
Are you sure that elm was not configured for MMDF format mail?
Or, maybe elm was correct, and you enabled procmail MMDF format support?

Other than that, I wouldn't know.  What does a small sample (procmail
generated) mailbox look like?
