WARNING: Long post, has lots of debug info
+=============================================+

Hi from a frustrated sendmail user...

I have had a frustrating problem haunt me for weeks now.

The problem can be seen below. Comments have been added between the
lines
in the debug output

First run the command to give the output...

   /usr/lib/sendmail -v -q

Output...

   Running QAA07616 (sequence 2 of 2)

   >>> EHLO netserv.my_domain.au

First question, why does my EHLO reply give "netserv.my_domain"
when the server is set up as "mail.my_domain"?

Some tests that have been done:
-------------------------------

Our link IP address (The firewall gateway) has a reverse lookup set
on an external DNS (ISP) for the link address. The reverse
name is "my_domain". This does not seem to work.

I have had the ISP set it to "mail.my_domain" and changed
"MASQUERADE_AS(`my_domain') to "MASQUERADE_AS(`mail.my_domain')

With "MASQUERADE_AS(`mail.my_domain'), mail will send to domains that
do otherwise not work. However we can not receive mail or send mail
to other domains than the ones that do reverse lookup.

The DNS entries.

109 IN PTR netserv.my_domain.

What can I do to get my mail system working. Note that all mail arrives

via port forwarding to an internal server (Netserv) and sends mail out
via
MASQ firewall.

Also note that the "mail.my_domain" IP 192.168.200.107 is a 'virtual' IP

on "eth0" on the server (The main IP is 192.168.200.109).

Is there a problem using virtual IP addresses on the server. Do I need
to
add "mail.my_domain" to "/etc/hosts" (It is in the DNS)?

Any help would be welcommed, I am out of ideas...

Best regards
Anthony

In your sendmail.mc file put an entry after your OSTYPE that says:

DOMAIN(`mail.mydomain')dnl

Then you'll need to make the appropriate additions to your sendmail.cw file.

Hope that helps.

sendmail -bv -d0.4 root
shows the setting of $j which is used for the EHLO command.
Masquerading does NOT change this value.

What's in the queue file?
Are you sure you didn't change the sendmail binary?
Or did you edit this log?
sendmail always put < > around the address...

Please see cf/README about the order of elements in the .mc file.

Thanks Jason,

Unfortuneately your suggestion did not work:-(

The fault mentioned in the original post is still there...

Is there an alternative to sendmail ?

I spent hours with triel and error to work out what is going on.

Nothing, absolutely nothing...I have the O'Reilly Sendmail book. 2nd edition
and lots of documentation but....

Please someone point me in the right direction.

Note:
=====
The mail server sits on an internal network with private addresses.
The server on whitch it runs is called "netserv"
"netserv" has IP 192.168.200.109
The mail server sits on an alias IP of 192.168.200.107 on the same machine
and is called "mail".

Hopefully I do not have to give up on using Linux for mail, it
would be a pitty but commercial preasures may force the issue.

How do I get my mail server to work then?

Does the "netserv.my_domain" presented at the EHLO command
get used by the receiving mail server for anything but logging?

If the machine name (netserv) does not resolve to anything
will sendmail still allow the mail to be received?

I have not changed anything in the log - I have even monitored
in real time what happens while connecting. ">>> MAIL From: SIZE=185"
always shows up as I have posted it.

The queue file contains the mail that will not send and it stays there
until the timeout period is reached where it is returned to the
sender.

A very specific question would be: "Where does sendmail insert the sender
address in < > ?"

What part of the "sendmail.cf" controls this?

I have read that README so many times that my head spins. Still
no go.

I have built 15!!! different sendmail.cf files (Mith m4)
containing various settings on masquerading etc. but
none seem to work.

I did once manage to send all mail in the queue but
have not been able to replicate the situation.

I am getting desperate on this issue. This problem has haunted me
for 3 weeks now! Either the RedHat 6.1 sendmail distribution
is broken or I am overlooking something else.

Further information:

I have fixed the ">>> EHLO netserv.my_domain" issue by doing the following:

   Dmmy_domain
   define(`confDOMAIN_NAME', `mail.$m')

This causes netserv (Machine name) to be replaced by a name of my choice)

I still leaves the ">>> MAIL From: SIZE=138" problem:-(
