This is what I am seeing on the server syslog. Every half hour or so, I get
two messages:

smap[21550]: 205.240.25.2 host address lookup failed
smap[21550]: connect host=unknown/205.240.25.2

This is the Pond's (pond.net) IP address. Apparently SMAP is trying to find
out the domain name associated with the IP address, so it can determine if
they are one of the sites that we don't want spamming us. This
inverse DNS lookup is failing. I can test this inverse lookup with
the nslookup program, which also fails for this address. All other
addresses I try are successful. Any idea what might be causing this?

Please e-mail me if you have a fix: tecsupport@uswest.net

Thanks,
Eric

Because the ixa.net servers that this reverse domain is delegated to aren't
responding to DNS queries (they respond to pings, though).

Would this cause my problem and can it be fixed?

Thanks,
Eric

Yes, it would. It can be fixed by the ixa.net system administrators.

Check your Gauntlet documentation to find out if there's a way to make smap
tolerant of client lookup failures.
