Any help or advice or suggestions regarding the following problem would be
most gratefully received and appreciated. Thanks in advance...

I've just recently installed Slackware Linux v2.0 to replace my old (heavily
patched/upgraded) SLS 1.03 Linux.

I am running Linux kernel version 1.1.42 on a 486-sx-33 with 8MB ram.
Smail is v3.1.28, uucp is taylor uucp version 1.05.

I can send mail without any problems to either of the two sites which I
connect to for my uucp feed. However, mail to other sites is not being
sent due to an error 170 from /usr/bin/uuname.

I am using the same configuration files which I previously used with the
old version of Linux, a very simple no-frills configuration...basically just
a paths file and a smart_path defined like so:

---cut here---/var/lib/smail/config---
#
# visible_domain list the domains (primary first) we say we're in
#
visible_domain=pronet.com:uucp
#
# next is the name in our headers
#
visible_name=muffin.pronet.com
#
# this is the path to our smarthost (this could be sysa!sysb!sysc etc.)
#
smart_path=jabaru
smart_transport=uux
---cut here---/var/lib/smail/config---

---cut here---/var/lib/smail/paths---
.apana.org.au	boombox!%s
boombox	boombox!%s
jabaru	jabaru!%s
jabaru.pronet.com	jabaru!%s
muffin	%s
muffin.apana.org.au	%s
muffin.pronet.com	%s
---cut here---/var/lib/smail/paths---

My machine is in the pronet.com domain and in apana.org.au -
jabaru.pronet.com is my smart_host, and I want all mail for the apana
domain to be sent via boombox.apana.org.au. I have uucp connections
with both jabaru and boombox. All of this worked beautifully until I
upgraded my Linux a week ago.

here's the error message as logged in /usr/spool/smail/log/logfile:

---cut here---/usr/spool/smail/log/logfile---
09/04/94 18:48:53: [m0qhDFt-000EdhC] received
|	     from: root
|	  program: send-mail
|	     size: 107 bytes
09/04/94 18:48:54: [m0qhDFt-000EdhC] cas@tanus.oz.au ... deferred: (ERR_170)
                   router uucp_neighbors: read error in output from
                   `/usr/bin/uuname'
---cut here---/usr/spool/smail/log/logfile---

uuname works as expected if run on the command line. I've tried lots of
things to fix the problem, including recompiling uuname (taylor uucp v1.05)
just in case the binary was corrupted.

What's odd is that there is no problem if the mail is being sent to one of
the sites defined in my uucp configuration (uucp works perfectly, btw) but
not if it isn't defined.
