Problem with rnews executions being rejected on Solaris 2.6 machine

Hi,

I'm running Taylor UUCP 1.06.1 on my server machine to provide UUCP
facilities for people who can't afford to tie up their phone lines for long
periods to look at news and email.

However over recent months some UUCP users have been contacting me to say
that they are trying to post news articles via UUCP, but the rnews
executions are being rejected at the time uux is run to process the news and
mail batches that have been sent over by the user's remote machine(s).

I have never explicitly disabled rnews for any of the UUCP sites my server
handles. The current site in question, called 'bellman', calls in regularly
to transfer news and email batches back and forth. Here is the output from
'uuchk' for it's sys file entry:

System: bellman
When called using any login name
May make local requests when called
May send by local request: /
May send by remote request: ~
May accept by local request: ~
May receive by remote request: ~
 May execute rnews rmail
 Execution path /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/local/bin
 Will leave 50000 bytes available
 Public directory is /var/spool/uucppublic
 Will use any known protocol
Calls will never be placed to this system

Now this indicates that both rmail *and* rnews executions are permitted, so
I'm completely at a loss now to figure out why rnews executions are being
rejected... It happened with one other UUCP site very frequently in the past
(about a year ago) and I couldn't work it out then either.

Could it possibly be some sort of race problem in different parts of the uux
code? Has anyone experienced something like this before?

The server machine is a Sparcstation 10 running SunOS 5.6 (aka Solaris 2.6).

I've been using Taylor UUCP for quite a few years now and it's only in the
last 12 months or so that these problems with rnews executions have been
occuring.

Regards,

Craig.

No. Your uux is not returning errors on the news batches they're
sending to you. Uux doesn't run on those batches. Uux is for
the news and mail you're sending *to them*.

Uuxqt is the program that runs on the news and mail they send to you.

Your very first stop is your uuxqt log files for that site. They will
show the rejection and very likely the reason.

Here is the UUCP Problem Mantra. Repeat it ten times:

    Always, Always, Always, Always,
What do your log files say?
