Taylor + C News CR --> garbled batches

I have recently concluded a major overhaul of UUCP and news software on
this system. The existing Svr4 UUCP was replaced by Taylor UUCP (1.04)
and the Performance Release of C News was upgraded to the Cleanup Release.

What I've found is that a significant amount of incoming news batches are
garbled. Brought over compressed, they won't uncompress cleanly; when it's
forced, the first half of each batch looks fine, but as one goes further and
further in the file it becomes more and more garbled until it's unreadable.

This happens to only a few percent of the news traffic, it's scattered in
origin (not just one originating upstream feed) and it's persistent. It's
causes daily coredumps of the news unpacking software and I've had to
rebuild the history once when the dbz file got corrupted.

Modem traffic is 'i' protocol on a V.32bis and a V.32, and 'g' on a
Trailblazer. E-mail has not been affected. Environment is Novell
UnixWare.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Uprgading to patchlevel "D"
of C News has not helped.
